A short story

Deep within an abandoned building, where no one suspected a thing. There was an underground auction that only a few select knew.

The place was old and musty on the first floor as it should; but as one goes further. You are greeted by a man dressed in black, who is standing before a red rope. “How did you find this place?” He asked as you ponder the question.

You recall coming across an old poster laying on the ground when walking past an alleyway. You dig into your pocket and pull it out to show the man.

He takes the poster and cocks his head before looking back at you. “This poster is older than you and I. How or where did you come across such a thing?” He ponders as you shrug your shoulders and explain where you found it.

The man mutters something under his breath before moving out of the way to let you by. You thank the man as you walk into the main room. When you arrive you cannot believe your eyes as to what is in there.

Rows and rows of mythical creatures and monsters of old are sitting there in cages. Some with fear in their eyes, others forlorn as they resign to their fate.

As you stroll up and down these rows to get a closer look. A man, wearing what can only be described as a ringleader’s outfit, jumps onto the stage and starts talking.

“Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome tonight’s auction. Here we have a rare specimen. A being that hasn’t been seen in centuries.” He said as you head over to the stage. When you get closer two men wheel in a cage that contains a woman that looked to be about your age; maybe a little younger. It was hard to tell. But what was telling was the exotic clothes she wore and had strange fox-like ears and a tail.

“That’s a human, Lars.” A man shouted from the crowd. “Yeah, what makes her so special?” Another shouted in agreement as the place murmured and whispered to one another. “Quiet, quiet, everyone. I understand your grumblings but please trust me this woman is a kitsune. And I know how much some of you have been wanting a kitsune of your very own. It was difficult, but we managed to get one for you.” He replied as the room went silent. “Now, how much for her? Shall we get started at 2 million?”

The room exploded with voices shouting over one another. The last highest bid you heard was 4 million. “6 million.” You shout, causing the room to go silent and everyone to stare at you. “Sold, to the man in red,” Lars said as everyone grumbled and cursed.

You are taken into the back where you fill out the paperwork, fill out a check, and are given items that were to keep the woman in line. The brutish men grab her roughly and threw her to the ground. “Hey, what’s the deal?” You shout at them as you help her up. “Hey, are you alright?” You ask as you help her up. “Yes.” She responses meekly before looking up at you.

“You’re not a human, are you?” She asks. “No, I am not a human. I am someone that is here to get you out of this place.” You whisper as the two of you walk out of the mysterious Auction House.
