A short story about two hunters and a talking wolf.

“That’s not an ordinary wolf, Steven,” Hal exclaimed as he forced his friend to lower his shotgun. The two hunters stared at the wolf as he stared back at them with sad, angry eyes. “Kill what is needed in these woods for sustenance; take nothing more than what you need to survive in a year. That is what you promised years ago, Hal when I spared your life for sports hunting.” The beast growled as he took a step forward towards the now quivering men. “What the hell is going on? What’s he talking about?” Steven wailed. “You two have upset the balance of these woods and the forest spirit that dwells here. I am here just to do my job, punish you two, for killing an innocent fox and fellow wolf.” The talking wolf glanced over at their sled that was carrying various dead animals. His face became saddened and hurt by seeing them. “Some of these animals I understand, like the white-tailed deer and the bison, but why the wolf and fox? Is it all for just their pelts? If that’s the case, you don’t need them; it is the 21 century after all.” The wolf then started to snarl and bare his teeth. “This is the thing you said you would never do again, Hal! And you broke that promise. Now it is time for you to pay for breaking it!” The beast charged at them and the last thing that was ever heard from them was their echoing screams that rang through the sacred forest.
