The Kaeyama’s Technology and Magic System

In my last post, I mentioned that I would talk about the technology within the Kaeyama with Bolyra specifically in mind since I brought them up first in the same post. The country is a medieval fantasy setting, but with some modern tech thrown into the mix.

Now, there aren’t cars or anything like that. The machine tech that is usually seen is used by the Healers, such as ultrasound machines, EKG machines, and Anesthesia machines for an example when it comes to health. For other examples there are special lanterns and torches that have been created to capture Light and Fire magicks to light homes, darken caves, etc.

While there is magic in this world, there is a cap/mana system to it. Excluding Light Magic, where it follows its own rules unless it is used for Healing, a person can only use their abilities for a certain amount of time during the day or night, if they are a nighttime person. So, because of this, the people have created machines, plumbing, and the like to assist them and to ensure mage users as well as the Healers themselves aren’t ending up in the Healing Houses that often due to magic burnout.

Now, some are probably wondering since I brought up there aren’t cars in this world - how do people get around then? They either walk, horseback riding, horse drawn carriages (mostly royalty and nobles go this route), flight via dragons or other winged beasts, or they use teleportation runes.

Since I’m on the subject of magic, runes and special magic powered crystals is what runs the machines within this world. The runes have to be replaced every few years, whereas the special magic powered crystals are renewed by Light magic. While the magic crystals are elemental in nature, they actually ignore this, and use both the twin suns’ rays as well as Light magic to renew themselves.

About Light Magic, it is a bit of an oddity within this world. Now, when it is used for lighting purposes, it doesn’t affect the caster and they can use this ability as much as they’d like. The reason for this? Lack of electricity. While there is Lightning Magic and there is a possibility for electricity to become a thing, many don’t bother on trying to harness it as Lightning Magic is wild and unstable. The only time Light Magic follows the mana-like system is when it is used as Healing Magic, but with far more consequences involved as there is more energy involved then say with Fire or Frost Magic.
